Opening leads after a strong two club opening. by Linda J Green

When the opponent opens a strong two club showing 22 HCP or more , we have to tread very carefully with our opening leads so as not to give away many overtricks. Should they play in a suit contract , it is usually best to make a passive lead. Should they play in a no trump contract unless you have a 5-card or longer suit , lead passive again- from what you do not have!

A: 7. As the strong hand is on your right try to lead from what you do not have -passive. Middle of 3 cards.7 - 8 - 6. MUD - Middle - Up - Down. To lead a trump holding the Jack could be very costly of partner holds an honor. To lead the 4th highest club against a strong hand could also cost a trick.

** 2nd negative 0-4 HCP.

 Your choice:
A: 2. Any trump would be a good lead. When the opener shows two suits and they settle in the 2nd suit, a trump lead is usually the best lead if you are long in their 1st suit . This is to prevent declarer from trumping the 1st suit.

 Your choice:
A: 9 . When declarer shows a strong hand and they did not look for a 4-card major, we try to lead a major. Do not lead the 4 as it shows an honor . Leading the 9 shows no interest and should not cost a trick. Unless we have a 5-card suit , it is best to lead passively.
