Oh no! What now? by Marti Ronemus

In the five hands that follow, we're going to be responder. It's our rebid that will shape the auction. Prepare to evaluate your hand's assets and point-range before making your decision. Most importantly, visualize Pard's hand and how yours fits.

Q: 1 - As South, what's your rebid?

 Your choice:
A: 2: Well, aren't we between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea. Pard has offered us a choice of two suits and we hate them both. Remember the concept of the Crummy Dummy. Our hand is essentially worthless unless Spades are trumps. Pard has shown a minimum hand. Let's do the same, and show our six-card suit.

Question 2

 A J 9 2

Q: 2 - As South, our job is a little harder. (Spoiler Alert:) Pard's bidding shows a HUGE hand... His second-named suit is higher ranking than the first. He's guaranteeing longer Clubs than Hearts and a strong intermediate hand. It's called a Reverse.

 Your choice:
A: 4: Pard's got a big hand with longer Clubs than Hearts, probably 5-4. We're going to show our fit, and we belong to game, so bid it. We're just delighted to have such a lovely fit. Whew.

 Your choice:
A: Pass: Just where do you think you're going, anyway? Pard has shown a minimum hand with six Diamonds. You've got a minimum, with support for Diamonds. Remember: In a non-competitive auction (just one side is bidding) two minimum hands should never go above 2.

Q: 4 - South?
SouthWestNorthEast

?

 Your choice:
A: 2 No-trump: Pard has a minimum hand that's sounding like it's "bottom heavy". We like our chances in no-trump, and our bid shows exactly 10-12 pts, flat, with the unbid suits stopped. It's hard to argue with perfection and this bid is it. We don't want to go to 3 No-trump... that's Pard's job.

Question 5

Q: 5 - One last try. South?
SouthWestNorthEast

?

 Your choice:
A: 4: We know we want to be in game. No-trump is reasonably viable. BUT!! Pard is known to be distributional, and so are we. This often spells transportation problems, and in a cowardly moment, we choose the more likely successful route. Others may be in no-trump and make it, and we'll hate ourselves.
