What's Forcing? "The History of Time" by Marti Ronemus

As our Faithful Readers know, we try to not only help you improve your game, but ensure that you have a daily tidbit to help your conversation sparkle. Here's today's gem.

Have you ever wondered why "clockwise" runs from right to left? Well, back in the mists of time when sundials were the timekeepers, the rotation of the earth moved the shadow from right to left. Naturally when clocks finally got hands, it only made sense for them to move from right to left.

What, you ask? Didn't clocks always have hands? No they did not. They chimed a bell. The word "clock," in fact, comes from medieval Latin "clocca," which means "bell."

And now it's "time" to get to work. Today's quiz is a little different. You're going to have to decide if the last bid in the sequence is forcing or not. Simple, no? No.

By the way, don't look for hands. There won't be any!! Just the bidding... which goes clockwise!

Question 1

  Your Hand

Q: 1 - Remember: no hands today!
South:

--1p
1

Is 1 forcing or not?

 Your choice:
A: Forcing: A new suit by an unpassed responder is as forcing as that wretched alarm clock screaming at you. DO something!! The bidding cannot end unless one partner has limited their hand.

Question 2

  Your Hand

Q: 2 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--1p
1 No-trumpp2p
2

Is 2 forcing or not?

 Your choice:
A: Not Forcing: South limited his hand with his 1 No-trump bid. His 2 bid is saying he couldn't name a new suit at the 2-level initially because he doesn't have 10-plus points. Now that his hand is limited, he can show a LONG suit, probably a good one, too. The bid is NOT forcing.

Question 3

Q: 3 - Is 3 forcing?
**2 is preemptive

3

 Your choice:
A: Forcing! Forcing! Forcing! The bidding may NOT end until one of the partners has limited their hand and neither North nor South has done that.

Question 4

  Your Hand

Q: 4 - Is 2 forcing?
SouthWestNorthEast
1p1 No-trumpp
2

 Your choice:
A: Not Forcing: South is giving North a choice of two suits. If North likes Clubs better, he is expected to pass. Hearts better? Bid 2. North has limited his hand, so the bidding can end at any time after 2.

Question 5

  Your Hand

Q: 5 - Is 3 forcing?
SouthWestNorthEast
1p1 No-trumpp
3

 Your choice:
A: Forcing: That new suit is at the three level, which makes it forcing. The last hand, opener's rebid was the cheapest possible. Now we've cranked it up a notch. Responder must bid one more time. The 3 bid is still unlimited. All we know is that it isn't minimum.

And now it's time to turn the clock forward and play our hand.
