"Here Comes the Judge" by Marti Ronemus

Every bid made changes the value of your hand, and that's what today's quiz is all about. Judgment. We're going to talk about the factors and judgments you should be making. So...

You sort your hand. It's got 10 HCP (High Card Points), a "crease" hand. What's that? Well, a 10 pt hand can be downgraded to a minimum responder hand or upgraded to an intermediate (invitational) responder hand. It's a "wait and see" hand. We love the Spades, but the Q is of very questionable value.

In each of the following questions, you'll be asked to judge whether your hand has increased or decreased. And it will all depend on the bids. Get out your judge's gavel.

Question 1

  Your Hand
 A K J 9 6
 Q 2
 5 3 2
 7 4 2

Q: 1 - You are South and your Pard opens 1. What has happened to the value of your hand?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1pass
?

 Your choice:
A: Increased: Actually, the value of your hand just went through the roof. Pard opened, right? His points sure aren't in Spades, so all your honors are "working" honors. We're still not delighted with our Q, but this hand is now clearly in the Invitational range, and with little encouragement, we can shove it into game-going. What we are going to bid depends where you are on your learning curve. If you're new, you might just want to jump to 4. If you're more experienced, you might want to make a "temporizing" bid of 2. Story for another day.

 7 4 2

Q: 2 - You are South and your Pard opens 1. What now?

 Your choice:
A: Not sure yet: While we like what that does for our Q, we're not sure yet where this hand is going. We need another round of bidding to help us. Meantime, we are going to bid 1.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 A K J 9 6
 Q 2
 5 3 2
 7 4 2

Q: 5 - This time, Pard rebids his Hearts. Hmmm...
SouthWestNorthEast
--1pass
1pass3pass
?

 Your choice:
A: Increased: My goodness, it doesn't get much better than this. Now our Q is a hot card, and, since we're going to be dummy, our Spades provide the perfect place for Pard to DUMP losers. AND!! Pard has 16-18 pts with six Hearts. We are definitely going to bid 4.

Did we make the right decision? Was our judgment good? We're going to play this hand and find out.
