"If the Shoe Fits" by Marti Ronemus

Responding with a fit isn't as easy as one might think. We have responsibilities! Should we raise Pard? Should we show another suit? How high should we bid? Exhausting!

Let's remember our Wonderbra rule. With a minimum hand, we are going to support with support. Most of the time. With a bigger hand? Things get a little tricky. Let's try some and see what happens.

Question 1

  Your Hand
 A 5 4 3
 K 10 9
 9 5 4
 8 4 3

Q: 1 - As South, we respond?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: Wonderbra! We have a minimum hand. We have support for Pard's suit. Were you tempted to bid the Spades? Repeat after me: With a minimum hand and support for Pard's (major!) suit, support! And forget a No-trump response. You've got an eight card major fit. Bid what you have. By the way, it's non-forcing and limiting. It's now Pard's problem.

Question 2

  Your Hand
 A 5 4 3
 K 10 9
 A 5 4 3
 8 4

Q: 2 - As South, we respond?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: Have you learned Limit Raises yet? If not, 3 is perfect. It shows support and 10-12 pts. Spot on! That show fits perfectly. If you've learned Limit Raises, you'll bid 1, unlimited and forcing.

Question 3

 A K 5 4 3
 K 10 9
 Q 5 4
 8 4

Q: 3 - As South, we respond?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass

 Your choice:
A: 1: This hand is way too nice to support Pard immediately. We know we belong in game and most likely in Hearts, but let's not rush this thing. Our bid is unlimited and forcing.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 Q 5 4
 K 10
 Q 5 4 3
 K 8 4

Q: 4 - As South, we respond?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 1 No-trump: We cannot really support Pard's Hearts with only two. We are going to bid 1 No-trump. What, you say? But we have 10 pts! Yeah, but this hand has nothing to recommend it. The shoe doesn't really fit. We don't have any nice Honorettes (9s and 10s), our honors are scattered all over the hand. There's no real source of tricks. We downgrade to a minimum response. We limit our hand, too. Now it's Pard's problem.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 9 8 7
 A 7 5 4
 K J 5
 K 9 3

Q: 5 - Last chance to get it right. As South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: We have a perfect bid available. 3 shows a fit (probably four pieces) and 10-12 pts. It just doesn't get any better, as we've limited our hand and now! It's Pard's problem!!

Did we make a good decision? What will Pard do next? Tune in. We are going to play this hand, and magically we will switch sides of the table and get to finalize the contract and play the hand. See you on the "flip side."
