"I'm Your Angel" Responder Rebids by Marti Ronemus

I just got an email from a new player who lamented about how nasty her "mentor" is to her when they play. She said it was hard for her to learn because she was more worried about not upsetting her partner than grasping what she did wrong.

What?

No one can learn this game with three opponents at the table. If your Pard doesn't make you feel better about yourself, dump the creep and find someone who will be your angel. Celine Dion told us that back in 1998. Weren't you listening?

Meantime, today we tackle those tricky Responder Rebids.

Question 1

  Your Hand
 4 3
 A Q 8
 J 9 2
 K 10 7 4 3

Q: 1 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
3Pass3Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: What is Pard up to? Naming a new suit after trump has been agreed on can be used many different ways, but for less-experienced players, we suggest it is showing a stopper in that suit. Pard wants to be in 3 No-trump rather than a minor, but we think he's missing a major suit stopper. By bidding 3, we keep the bidding below 3 No-trump and show Pard we have help in Hearts. Now it's up to him. He knows our points and our shape.

Question 2

 A 7 5
 K Q 9 4
 J 7 6
 10 8 4

Q: 2 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass1 No-trumpPass
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass: Do the Math! Your angel Pard has limited his hand to 12-14 points. You've got 10. That does NOT add up to game, especially with two flat hands.

Question 3

  Your Hand
 A 8 4
 K Q 9 5
 J 9 3
 10 5 2

Q: 3 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass2 No-trumpPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3 No-trump: We have essentially the same hand as last question, but this time, Pard's jump to 2 No-trump has shown 18-19 points and a flat hand. With our 10 points, we go to game. We have no need to show anything else about our hand. Pard is an angel for making things so simple. If we had a long suit somewhere we might be mildly interested in slam, but not, again, with two flat hands.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 4 3
 J 9 8 6
 A Q 10 8 4
 K 7

Q: 4 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
2Pass2 No-trumpPass
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass: Again, it's a question of Do the Math. We have 10 points and Pard's 2 No-trump rebid has shown a minimum hand. We just don't have it. Pard is going to have to play this, so don't put him in a game he likely can't make. That's not how angels behave.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 K 10 2
 A K 10 8 3 2
 5 4
 5 4

Q: 5 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: Pard's got a minimum hand with six Clubs. We've got a great suit and an invitational strength hand. 2 isn't enough. 3 is just right. We'd rather be in Hearts than Clubs, and No-trump would likely be a nightmare of confused transportation. Leave it up to Pard by limiting and describing our hand further.

And now, let's tackle a defense hand, with our Angel Pard at our side.
