"84 Million Missing a Year" Responding to Jump Shifts by Marti Ronemus

It's estimated that in the UK, 84 Million socks go missing a year. The situation is so dire that Samsung commissioned a statistician and a psychologist to study the problem. (You can't make this stuff up, folks.) Here's what they found: While indeed front loading washers can occasionally eat a sock (it ends up in the innards, behind the drum), the reality is that it's lack of attention to details. When a sock is missing, it is usually under the bed, behind the dryer, in a pant leg. If a REAL search were conducted, the missing would be found.

Personally, I have a different explanation. Socks are the larval stage of coat hangers.

Today's bridge challenge involves paying attention to details. We're going to be responder and rebid after Pard makes a jump shift. When Pard makes a jump shift, he is showing a very strong hand, usually shapely, and is forcing the auction to game. Agreements on point count vary but, since it's forcing to game, it's gotta be shapely and huge.

 Your choice:
A: 3: We can picture Pard with a strong hand, and at least 5-4 in his suits. Raising Clubs would push Pard past 3 No-trump. Better to give support with our honor doubleton and make our problem HIS problem.

 Your choice:
A: 4: Last hand we gave a very unenthusiastic raise of Pard's first suit. This time we found the missing socks and are delighted to raise to game. There's no point in rebidding our Spades. When Pard hears our nice bid, he knows we have a fit, and a weak hand.

A: 5: There's no place we'd rather be, so let's tell Pard our story. We're not crazy about our void in Pard's first bid suit, but we sure love his second suit. A matched pair! Principle of rapid arrival. With a nicer hand, we'd bid 4.

 Your choice:
A: 3: We're going to slam. We're using the principle of slow arrival, beginning by showing Pard our fancy-shmancy pair of socks... er, Hearts. With a less exciting hand, we'd go to game. Maybe we'll get to show our Diamond support later. Meantime... let's wait and hear what he has to say.

And now, let's pay attention to detail in our hand!
