What happened to 'E'? Responder Places Contract by Marti Ronemus

Remember Report Card Day? The hope to see all "A"s and "B"s? The horror of that "F"? (At gunpoint, I couldn't manage to learn Latin.) BUT!! The big question... How do you get from "D" to "F"? What ever happened to "E"?

First a little history. The grading system we are all so familiar with originated at Mount Holyoke College, in MA, in 1897. It won the hearts of educators all over, since mandatory attendance and public education put quite a bit of pressures on teachers.

Initially there indeed was an "E", right after "D" where it belongs. Teachers wanted to replace it with "F", for failure, because some thought "E" stood for Excellent. Hey, what can I say? I just report the news.

So now that we know the rest of the story, let's see if we can get come good grades on our quiz.

A: Pass: Do the Math! Pard's got a minimum opener of 12-14, added to our 10-ish. Notice that we have a double fit, with Pard's Diamonds and Hearts. It is important to mention the major before settling on the minor. It's all about the score.

 Your choice:
A: 4: Same bidding, but this time we're at the top of our range and also have something extra to offer. We've got two doubletons, and a long, albeit ugly, suit. We take this one to game, happily.

We've gotten a passing grade. Time for our hand.
