"Gasp! Say it Ain't So!" Opener Rebids by Marti Ronemus

And you thought the worst sin you could commit at that cheerful family-fun ice cream parlor was ordering a triple cookie dough cone. Well, guess again. At the turn of the 20th Century, ice cream parlors were viewed as dens of corruption, prostitution and sin. No kidding, folks. In 1909 a 481-page book, "War on White Slave Trade" was published by the Chicago city government. It was filled with hysterical warnings about "recruitment stations where scores of girls have take first steps downward." Well, I don't care. I'm STILL risking my reputation by stopping in for a cone of salted caramel ice cream. So there!

And now let's talk about our bridge reputations, which are much more fragile. In this quiz, we open the bidding and Pard makes a forcing bid. Now it's time to fan the flames and finish the description of our hand making a limiting bid. So far, neither we nor Pard have done so. In each example, we've opened 1 and Pard responds 1.

 K 9 6 5
 A Q 9 8 2

Q: 1 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast

 Your choice:
A: 1: We still haven't found our fit, so we continue the description of our hand. Pard knows we don't have more than 17-ish or we would have jump-shifted.

Question 2

  Your Hand
 A Q 10 8
 9 8 7 6
 K 2
 A J 9

Q: 2 - South?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: We've found our fit. It doesn't matter that we don't like our Hearts: We aren't saying "good Hearts," we're saying "four Hearts." Also we have a minimum opener, and need to tell Pard quickly or the ice cream will melt. Why not Spades? With a minimum hand, when we find our fit, show it.

Question 3

 A K 2
 K J 7 6
 8
 K Q 9 6 3

Q: 3 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: Just like last hand, we've found our fit, but this time we have an intermediate hand of 16-18, and need to show Pard we aren't minimum. Now that Pard knows our point count, he'll know whether to call the cops or not. Up to him, because we've limited our hand.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 A Q
 A K 7 6
 9 8 4
 A Q 8 4

Q: 4 - South?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 4: See how simple this is? With a minimum 12-14, we bid cheap. With 16-18, jump a level. 19-21, go to game. Is our 4 bid a shut-out? Absolutely not. It gives Pard point count and now it's up to him. Incidentally, a jump to 2 No-trump would show our exact point count, 18-19, but it would deny four Hearts and/or four Spades.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 A Q 8 4
 K 3
 K 3
 A K 10 9 3

Q: 5 - South?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: We've got another bonfire of a hand, and want to show our Spades. A new suit by opener is NOT forcing, so we're going to make a JUMP SHIFT, which is super-forcing and hot, hot, hot. Notice it is NOT promising a five-card suit.

We are indeed on fire after our quiz. Let's take it to the table.
