"Whatever Happened to..." Responder rebids by Marti Ronemus

Characters come and go on TV for many creative reasons, but every now and then, one disappears... for punishment! Sometimes they want too much more money, sometimes they have other obligations. Other times, well... here are two of our favorite examples.

The hit show "Criminal Minds" lost one of its top stars Thomas Gibson, because he allegedly kicked a writer for creative differences. As a writer, this strikes terror into my heart. Thomas' absence was never very clearly explained on the series... he just sort of drifted away.

And then there was Jay Thomas who was introduced into the "Cheers" cast in their fifth season as Eddie LeBec, boyfriend and then husband of Carla. Jay, after insulting Rhea Perleman one time too many, was killed off in a lovely twist of irony. His character was run over by a Zamboni.

And now fellow bridge players, lest we find ourselves written out of the show, let's sharpen up our bidding. We're going to see the same auction each hand today, and as responder, we shouldn't have too hard a time bidding again. (Hint to make things even easier... we will NOT be passing!)

Question 1

 K 9 4 3
 4 3 2
 K J 8 2
 A 9

Q: 1 - South:?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass

?

 Your choice:
A: 3: Pard didn't jump shift, so he's pretty much limited to a VERY ratty 18 pts but could have as little as 12 pts. With our 12 pts in favor of Spades, we need to invite. Easy peasy.

Q: 2 - South:?

--1Pass

?

 Your choice:
A: 3: Again, we want to invite in Spades. Were you tempted to bid the Hearts? That could be a firing offense. Your partner by-passed Hearts in favor of Spades. It doesn't make sense to bid a suit Pard denied... at least in this auction.

A: 4: We've got game and do NOT have slam (remember, Pard does NOT have more than 17). Just bid it.

Q: 4 - South:?

 Your choice:
A: 2: Pard's new suit is not forcing and we've got our fit. BUT!! We should raise. If Pard's got 16-ish pts, game is available. Tell Pard we've got the fit and 6-9 pts.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 K 5 4

 K J 9 8 4 3
 5 4 3

Q: 5 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: Well, we could raise the Spades and be in a seven-card fit, but our hand will have more value if we can name the trump suit. Our singleton Heart will be a thing of beauty then. By the way, WE will be limiting OUR hand, and placing the contract will be up to Pard.

Well, let's see if we still have a job after we tackle our hand!
