"Breakfast of Chamions" Opener Rebids by Marti Ronemus

This may come as good news for some: Beer is no longer just for Happy Hour. While there are many breakfast-themed brews (scrapple and toaster pastries just to name two), a New England brewery has come up with a show-stopper. Called "Saturday Morning Ale, it is infused with Cap'n Crunch Berry cereal.

This light ale with fruity notes can be enjoyed in your morning shower or at the table, but the brewer suggests it is best enjoyed with the Cartoon Network playing for the most authentic experience.

We aren't real sure if this is the best possible breakfast for a bridge player, but we do not sit in judgment. Instead we explore rebids by opener after Pard responds 1 No-trump. Pard has told us he has a minimum hand of no more than 9/10 HCP, and can't name a new suit at the one-level. Let's see where we decide to go.

Question 1

 6 5 4
 Q 9 3
 K Q J 9 2
 A 2

Q: 1 - South?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1 No-trumpPass
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass: Members of the Clint Eastwood School of Bidding don't much like that bid, but the road ends here. Pard's hand is minimum and so is ours. Repeat three times: In a non-competitive auction, two minimum hands should not bid above 2. We don't want to rebid the Diamonds, since it would show a six-card suit.

Question 2

 7 6
 K J 9 8
 A K 9 4 3
 K 2

Q: 2 - South?:
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1 No-trumpPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: No bid is perfect. We hate rebidding five-card suits, but our hand is unbalanced (nine cards in two suits = unbalanced). We cannot bid the Hearts because it's a suit Pard denied and you can't "reverse" with this hand (story for another day...). There's no perfect bid here, folks. We're just going to describe our hand the best we can.

Question 3

  Your Hand
 A 9
 A Q J 9 4 3
 K J 2
 3 2

Q: 3 - South?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1 No-trumpPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: This is a darn nice hand, and we have to show it. We are going to rebid our six-card suit, but more importantly, we're going to do it at the three-level. That shows 16-18 pts. If Pard is at the top of his bid he'll put us in game, either in Hearts (now knowing we have six) or No-trump. Our final destination is up to him now.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 9
 A J 8
 K J 9 8 7
 A K 4 3

Q: 4 - South?:
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1 No-trumpPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: Another tough one. We don't have quite enough to jump shift, but with our medium hand distributional hand, we need to tell Pard we are two-suited. 2 may be weaker, 2 isn't either, and with our singleton Spade, 2 No-trump isn't an option. 2 is the best we can do though, showing two suits. Sometimes we're not too sure where to go, but this will get us close.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 8
 A Q J 9 3
 A J 8
 A Q J 8

Q: 5 - South?:
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1 No-trumpPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: This time we know just what to do. We are two-suited and we have a maximum hand. We have a clear jump-shift, which is forcing to game.

Ready for our hand? Once we successfully play it, we will have earned a brewski.
