Overcalling A Preemptive Opening by Matthias Huberschwiller

Your opponent has opened a preemptive bid, and you have a good hand. You might want to bid.

Don't let yourself be distracted. With an opener and a good and long suit, you can bid it, even at a high-level. With shortness in their suit, you still have the take-out double as a weapon, and with a strong balanced hand, the No-Trump overcall keeps its natural meaning.

Good luck!

Q: 4 - What do you bid as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
---3
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass - Yes I know, it is sad, but you don't have a bid. 3 NT without a Diamond stopper would be suicidal, and you can't bid a Heart suit at the 3-level with only four cards.

You can't double either, since your partner would count on your having tolerance for Spades.

Q: 5 - What do you bid as South?

 Your choice:
A: 3 NT - With a good stopper and a strong balanced hand (at least 16), you can bid 3 NT. Yes, it's dangerous, but if you don't bid them, no one will bid them for you!
