Question 2

  Your Hand
N: A 5 4 2

S: Q 7 6 3

Q: 2 - How should you play this suit?

 Your choice:
A: Cash the Ace, then play low to the Queen - You will make three tricks when East has the King and the suit is 3-2.

Cashing the Ace first, before playing low to the Queen, picks up a singleton King with West. Leading the Queen would be pointless, since you want to make a trick with the Queen.

S: Q 6 2

Q: 3 - How should you play this suit?

 Your choice:
A: Low to the King, then low to the Jack - You need to play two times towards the grouped honors. If the suit breaks 3-3, you will make three tricks. If the suit is 4-2, you can make three tricks if West has A x; the Ace will fall on the second round before you play an honor.

N: A Q 5 3

S: J 7 4 2

Q: 4 - How should you play this suit?

 Your choice:
A: Low to the Queen, then the Ace - You cannot sacrifice the Jack; you don't have enough intermediate cards. For four tricks, you need to play a low one to the Queen and then cash the Ace, hoping that the King is doubleton in the West hand.

Question 5

  Your Hand
N: A Q 10 9 8

S:/span> 7 4 2

Q: 5 - How should you play this suit?

 Your choice:
A: Low to the 10, then low to the Queen - You need to take the double finesse by playing a low one to the 10 first. If this succeeds, you can repeat the finesse as many times as are needed.

If you start with a low one to the Queen, you will have a loser if both honors are onside, in the West hand.
