 Suit combinations by Matthias Huberschwiller

In this quiz, you won't have any leads to make. You will have to play a suit the best way you can.

You have as many entries as you need to go back and forth.

Will you find the right way to play the suit?

Question 1

  Your Hand
North: A Q 5 2
 -
 -
South: K 9 3 2

Q: 1 - How should you play the suit?

 Your choice:
A: The Ace and Queen first - You will make four tricks if the suit is 3-2, but you have an additional chance. If West has either the singleton 10 or Jack, you will be able to finesse against East.

Start with the Ace and Queen, to keep the K-9 tenace. If you see West play the Jack or 10 and then discard, take the marked finesse.

Question 2

  Your Hand
North: K 10 6 3 2
 -
 -
South: A 7 5 4

Q: 2 - You start with the Ace to keep the King-10 tenace, and the Jack appears from East. How should you play the suit?

 Your choice:
A: Low to the 10 - When East plays an honor, there are two possibilities - a singleton honor, or Q-J doubleton.

In the beginning, this covers three cases - bare Q, bare J, or QJ doubleton. When the Jack appears, it can be case 2 or case 3. But with case 3, East could also have played the Queen. Finessing gains against more cases, so you should finesse on the second round.

Question 3

  Your Hand
North: A K J 2
 -
 -
South: 7 5 4

Q: 3 - You need three tricks in the suit. How should you play the suit?

 Your choice:
A: Ace, King and low to the Jack - If you only need three tricks, you don't need to play for four tricks. You need to start with the Ace and King, in case the Queen is doubleton. Then, you play low to the Jack, in case the Queen is fourth with West.

The only case you will lose against is when East has Queen-fourth, but there was nothing to do about that anyway.

Question 4

  Your Hand
North: A J 3 2
 -
 -
South: K 9 5 4

Q: 4 - You are playing a slam with this suit as trumps, and you need to lose no more than one trick there. How should you play the suit?

 Your choice:
A: Ace and low to the 9 - This covers 100% of the cases, unless they are 5-0.

You will of course succeed with any 3-2 break. The Ace first lets you win against any 4-1 break where the 10 or the Queen is singleton.

If East has Q-10-x-x, the 9 will win the trick (or, if he plays the 10, you will only lose to the Queen). If West has Q-10-x-x, when East discards, you can win the King and play low to the Jack to lose only to the Queen.

Question 5

  Your Hand
North: A 3
 -
 -
South: Q 10 9 8 7

Q: 5 - You need to lose only one trick. How should you play the suit?

 Your choice:
A: Run the Queen - If the King is with West, you will succeed to lose only one trick, except if he has K-J-x-x, in which case there was nothing to be done anyway.

If not, you will succeed when the Jack is doubleton in either hand.
