What do partner's bids promise or ask for? by Frank Stewart

What do partner's bids promise or ask for?

And what should you do accordingly?

Test yourself in these five questions!

Question 1

  Your Hand
 A J
 8 6 5
 10 9 8
 A K 10 7 4

Q: 1 - What do you bid next as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
1NTPass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: Partner's minimum change of suit is not forcing, and for you to pass might be a winning action; he might have a weak hand with five hearts as well as five spades. But if he has five spades and four hearts, he should do better at the 5-2 fit. To bid two spades is correct.

Question 2

  Your Hand
 K 7 6 5 3 2
 A 9 7 4
 5
 A K

Q: 2 - What do you bid next as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass2Pass
2Pass3Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: The bidding hasn't developed well, but you must go on. Bid three spades, completing a picture of your 6-4 pattern and a good hand. With a weak hand such as K Q 10 5 3 2, J 9 7 4, 5, Q 3, you would hit the brakes by rebidding two spades at your second turn.

Question 3

  Your Hand
 K 7 2
 K J 9
 A Q J 3
 9 6 4

Q: 3 - What do you bid next as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
2NTPass3Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: Your 2NT forced to game and showed balanced pattern with stoppers in every unbid suit. Partner's three clubs says he is unsure about notrump (or perhaps whether to settle for game). Bid three diamonds to show strength there. If partner is worried about diamond weakness for a notrump contract, your bid will ease his mind.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 4 2
 10 6
 J 9 7 3
 A J 10 9 6

Q: 4 - What do you bid next as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1NTPass3Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: Opener's jump-shift is not only forcing, it is forcing to game (though perhaps not to an 11-trick game). You must not pass. Bid three spades, showing a tolerance for partner's first suit while offering no encouragement. A bid of 3NT would be defensible but not best.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 Q J 9 3
 A 4
 K 9 8 6 3
 8 5

Q: 5 - What do you bid as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
-1PassPass
?

 Your choice:
A: Double: Since your partner is marked with some values, you must not sell out cheaply. You probably have a makable contract somewhere. Double. Your hand would be too weak to double in the direct position, but "balancing" actions may be shaded. You won't like it if partner responds in clubs, but that is only one scenario of many.
