"What Happened to 'E'?" by Marti Ronemus

Remember Report Card Day? The hope to see all "A"s and "B"s? The horror of that "F"? (At gunpoint, I couldn't manage to learn Latin.) BUT!! The big question... How do you get from "D" to "F"? What ever happened to "E"?

First a little history. The grading system we are all so familiar with originated at Mount Holyoke College, in MA, in 1897. It won the hearts of educators all over, since mandatory attendance and public education put quite a bit of pressures on teachers.

Initially there indeed was an "E", right after "D" where it belongs. Teachers wanted to replace it with "F", for failure, because some thought "E" stood for Excellent. Hey, what can I say? I just report the news.

So now that we know the rest of the story, let's see if we can get come good grades on our quiz.

Question 1

  Your Hand
 10 9 8
 A J 10 9
 4 3
 K 9 7 6

Q: 1 - South:

--11

?

 Your choice:
A: Pass: Our Negative Double guaranteed four Hearts and enough points to respond to Pard's opener. We're not going any further, since if Pard had extra, he would have bid more. We expect him to have a minimum opener.

Question 2

 A K

 6 5 4 3 2
 A K

Q: 2 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
11DBLPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 1 No-trump: Pard's negative double promises four Spades and probably four Clubs. We hate both suits. We don't have a Heart stopper, but we have no alternative. Not sure what grade we'll get for this, but we are backed into a corner.

Q: 3 - South:

?

 Your choice:
A: 3: We are going to make this "temporizing" bid. Pard opened the bidding and with our Diamond honors, bound to be hard little workers, and our Aces, combined with the ten-card Spade fit, are looking like a possible slam despite Pard's limiting bid. Let's force Pard to bid again by bidding a new suit.

 Your choice:
A: 4: You get an "A" if you went to game with this hand. Why? Ten card trump fit, a singleton NOT in Pard's suit, and a four-card suit headed by an Ace. We love this hand.

We've gotten a solid "A" on our quiz. Let's try a hand.
