"Pets in Prison" by Marti Ronemus

From the news: In 2013 a white cat was stopped for questioning as it tried to slip into a prison in New Mexico. It was found to be wrapped in tape. When the tape was removed, it was discovered that saws, a drill, a phone charger and credit card were taped to its body. It seems the kitty had been raised in the prison, and was returning to help some old friends. After a brief stay at the prison, it was taken to a vet for needed repairs.

And in other news, in 2015 a pigeon (yes, a pigeon) was apprehended and arrested for espionage in India. It had a message stamped on its body, including a phone number for a Pakistani criminal. They couldn't hold the pigeon, however, as it seemed to elude capture as it flew the coop. (Sorry. I couldn't resist.)

Moving on, in our continuing efforts to keep Vu-Bridge players out of Bidder's Prison, we've got a great quiz for you.

Question 1

  Your Hand
 K J 10 4 3 2
 J 9
 8 5 4
 9 2

Q: 1 - What should you do now? South:
SouthWestNorthEast
PassPass1Pass
1Pass1 No-trumpPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: Good time to rebid our six-card suit. The hand is pathetic, but if we were willing to bid the first time, we should do it again. Do we have a fit? Yes. Pard wouldn't have rebid 1 No-trump with a singleton. He would have had another suit to bid. Why not leave Pard in 1 No-trump? We are the quiescent Crummy Dummy. We need to control this hand to stay out of prison.

SouthWestNorthEast

?

 Your choice:
A: Pass: Ouch. Yes, our Hearts are gorgeous. Yes, we've got the A. BUT!! We've got a minimum hand. Pard still has a chance to bid, and our Pass will tell him we're minimal. Trust your Pard. Is he not Superman?

Q: 4 - What would the Man of Steel do on this one?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 1 No-trump: You've got great Hearts, but Pard bypassed them. For now, we just bid 1 No-trump. Pard, who's unlimited, will bid his Hearts if he has them. Meantime we limited our hand, which means the problem of where we belong now bounces to Pard.

Q: 5 - One last chance to dodge the Kryptonite. South?
SouthWestNorthEast

1Pass1 No-trumpPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2 No-trump: Yes, we've got Spades, but who cares? Why bid them? Pard denied them. We've got 11 HCP, so let's tell Pard, and let him make the final decision. And he'll have to play it.

And now, let's try a hand.
