"Whatever Happened to..." by Marti Ronemus

Characters come and go on TV for many creative reasons, but every now and then, one disappears... for punishment! Sometimes they want too much more money, sometimes they have other obligations. Other times, well... here are two of our favorite examples.

The hit show "Criminal Minds" lost one of its top stars Thomas Gibson, because he allegedly kicked a writer for creative differences. As a writer, this strikes terror into my heart. Thomas' absence was never very clearly explained on the series... he just sort of drifted away.

And then there was Jay Thomas who was introduced into the "Cheers" cast in their fifth season as Eddie LeBec, boyfriend and then husband of Carla. Jay, after insulting Rhea Perleman one time too many, was killed off in a lovely twist of irony. His character was run over by a Zamboni.

And now fellow bridge players, lest we find ourselves written out of the show, let's sharpen up our bidding. We want to keep our jobs!

Q: 1 - South?"

 Your choice:
A: 6: C'mon, let's get some ZIP in the game! Pard made a vulnerable Take Out Double. We've got the mother lode and a rock of a suit. We could take it slower by starting with a cuebid of the opponent's suit, but honestly.

 Your choice:
A: 4: Pard had enough to overcall at the two-level, surely with our three aces we have enough to raise him to game.

 Your choice:
A: 2: We are "off the hook" because of the 2 bid, and we aren't the least bit happy with this hand. BUT! We've got a nine-card Heart fit and really should enter the auction. Pard will know we're a minimum hand with a nice Heart fit. He'll take it from there. He wants to keep his job too.

 Your choice:
A: 3 No-trump: Just a nice little review. Systems (Stayman and transfers) are usually on over an overcall No-trump bid. We've got game-going values, and with only five Hearts, we put it in No-trump. Pard will correct to 4 if he's got three Hearts.

A: 4: Although it might be fun to double them, our vulnerable game is worth more. We do pause to reflect, however, as we are borderline. We decide to be adventurous.
