 "More Danger!!" by Marti Ronemus

And we thought trying a new, complicated convention was dangerous life-on-the-edge? How about this! Mushroom hunting is even more dangerous. The differences between deadly and delicious mushrooms can be subtle and hard to spot, and it's not a verdict that should be left up to guessing. Earlier this year, 14 people in Northern California became sick after eating foraged "death cap" mushrooms, and three had to have liver transplants.

There are computer apps designed to help the amateur separate yum from death, but getting a guidebook is most experts' recommended method for safely foraging for mushrooms. So please, if you want to become a mushroom hunter, ditch the apps, hire a guide, take a class, or, at the very least, buy a good book. We need every bridge player alive!

Q: 1 - South:

 Your choice:
A: 1: Yes, yes, yes. We only have four Spades, and for an overcall we need five. BUT!! We have three juicy honors, we're not vulnerable (this helps if you need justification) and if we don't win the auction Pard will know what to lead. Plus... our Heart holding suggests that Pard may well be short.

 Your choice:
A: 1: When we're in the reopening seat, we can't make a preempt. 2 would show an opening-ish hand. Let's bid 1, and see when happens. You partner can be strong with no available bid. We know East has less than 6 points.

Q: 4 - South?

 Your choice:
A: Pass: We can't seem to find a bid for this. We can't double -- wrong shape. We can't overcall, even stretching, our suits aren't good enough. Last question we mentioned that sometimes the best hand at the table has to pass. This is a good example. Rats.

 Your choice:
A: Double: Same hand, different bidding sequence. When we enter the auction now, Pard will know we had the wrong shape before and are now showing four Hearts and Diamonds. Also we've got to have an opening-ish hand for this bid.
