 "Regional Accents" by Marti Ronemus

Our speech often gives away where we come from and/or live. But there are many other markers. Here's one I bet you didn't know. When you order egg rolls, the Duck Sauce that comes with it gives away where you are (just in case you were lost and wondering...)

On the East Coast, we get Duck Sauce that is orange, comes in packets and is made from a fruity apricot mixture. In New England, it is brown and chunky, and served in bowls on the table rather than packets. Contents? We're not sure. If we're on the West Coast, they won't know what the heck we're talking about. There's no such thing as Duck Sauce.

One final factoid... why is it called "duck sauce?" No ducks were killed, we're glad to hear. It comes from a soybean-based sauce served with Peking Duck.

Are there regional accents in bridge? You betcha. As we meet people from all over at our Boot Camps, and are often startled by the "creative" ways in which bids are used. "Everyone does it" is often the only reason given. And so be it. Let's look at some bids... from a more standard point of view.

Q: 1 - South:

 Your choice:
A: Pass: Yes we've got an eight-card trump fit. Yes we have invitational point count. BUT!! We've got shortness in Pard's first-bid suit. Our trumps are lousy (although that's not as big a deal), our Spades are only worth two tricks. And what good is our five-card suit? Let it go. No one will understand anything but a Pass.

Q: 2 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass

?

 Your choice:
A: 3 No-trump: We need to give Pard a little wiggle-room. He could have raised our Spades holding only three. We certainly have game values opposite his minimum opener. Let's let him correct to 4 if he's got four of them. Otherwise, he'll pass.

Q: 3 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: This is certainly a forcing bid and shows a stopper. We could jump to a Heart contract, but why rush? If our Hearts were nicer, we could continue in Hearts. If Pard only has three Hearts though, we could easily end up in the wrong place. Let's explore.

Q: 4 - South:

 Your choice:
A: 4: We've got an egg roll full of Spades. We don't mind a whole lot if Pard only has three. Also, we've really nothing else to say.

Q: 5 - South:

 Your choice:
A: 4: This was pathetic until Pard spoke up and supported our Hearts. Ten card trump fit? Singleton? Doubleton? Ten cards in two suits? If this isn't worth a jump to game, what is?

And on to our hand. Let's get this over with so we can get back to our egg roll.
