"Happy Bachelor's Day!" by Marti Ronemus

Only once every four years does February have 29 days, allowing us to celebrate Bachelor's Day. Sadly this isn't one of those years, but how did this all start? Back in 1288 In Scotland a law was passed that on Leap Year day, a woman could propose to a man. If the man refused he could be fined! One wonders how many men were hiding in the woods when this day came around.

AND!! What an inspiring, albeit small, step toward Women's Lib that was.

Just to balance that first step toward freedom for women, we'd like you to know that the first Playboy Club opened this day in 1960 in Chicago. Don't get me started!

Let's liberate our minds with a quiz.

Question 1

  Your Hand
 A 10 8 5
 7 6
 A J 9 5
 4 3 2

Q: 1 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--1 No-trumpp
2p2p
?

 Your choice:
A: 4: Some might only bid 3, but we get a distribution point, plus we've got some nice intermediates in our "long" suits.

Question 2

  Your Hand
 A 5 2
 A K 5 4 3 2
 5 4 3
 8

Q: 2 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1p2 No-trump**p
?

**13-15 pts.

 Your choice:
A: 3: Believe it or not, some would not open this hand. Obviously they never read Eddie Kantar, who encourages us to open a hand with two aces and a king, when the king is joined to one of the aces. It also meets the Rule of 20. So then Pard shows 13-15 pts, thus limiting his hand. It's up to us. Just as we upgraded last hand because of the presence of intermediates, we're going to downgrade this because of the lack of them. Some would go to game with this hand, and that's okay too. The singleton certainly makes the hand worth another look.

Question 3

  Your Hand
 Q J 8 4
 J 3
 A Q 9 8 4
 7 5

Q: 3 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
-11 No-TrumpPass
?

 Your choice:
A: Must discuss!: Different partnerships use different systems. Some cue-bid the opponent's major to show the other major with only four. Some bid 2 as Stayman for just the one suit. Some bid naturally. If you and Pard haven't discussed this, do so or you may find yourself being proposed to... and not having an answer!

Question 4

  Your Hand
 Q 8
 A K J 9 7 6
 K 8
 5 4 3

Q: 4 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
-1pp
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: Again, this is something to talk about with Pard. Most play that, in the Passout seat, a Jump Overcall is NOT preemptive. It shows of course a six-card suit, but promises a very nice opening hand.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 8 4
 K 7 6 5
 A Q J 10
 K 10 8

Q: 5 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
-122
?

 Your choice:
A: 4: Here's the thing. We're not sure if we have game or not, as Pard's overcall could be just 10-ish pts. Normally, as Advancer we would use a cue-bid to pop the question. BUT!! There's no point. We would have to bid 3 and Pard is shoved to the four-level no matter what. We have a nine-card trump fit, and some extra distribution, so we're just going to bid game.

Is this a good decision? We're going to play this hand and find out.
