Leads with a Weak Hand by Matthias Huberschwiller

Your opponents have bid a contract and you have a very weak hand. Your partner will have almost all of your side's points, so you need to take this into consideration.

Your lead.

Question 1

 8 6
 J 7 6
 8 7 3

Q: 1 - What do you lead as West?
SouthWestNorthEast
1 NTPass3 NTPass
PassPass

 Your choice:
A: 8 - This sequence calls for a major suit lead, but which one?

You have long Spades, but how will you get on lead to take them, even if you can set them up? You won't be able to.

It's better to lead Hearts, knowing that your partner has at least 4 of them (or maybe 5). He'll be able to get back on lead to make Heart tricks.

Q: 2 - What do you lead as West?

2 NT - Jacoby, forcing to game with 4 trumps

 Your choice:
A: 7 - With a weak hand, it's better to lead your shortest suit. You will have more of a chance of setting up tricks without them being ruffed, and the only way you're going to make a trick is by ruffing the third Diamond.

4PassPassPass

 Your choice:
A: 7 - Especially with a weak hand, it's better to lead your singleton than your partner's suit. It's strange to lead dummy's first bid suit, so partner will know you want a ruff.

Hearts will be the entries to your partner's hand later.

 Your choice:
A: 2 - Under-leading the Spade Queen is the least dangerous option amongst four bad leads. If your partner has an honor, it probably won't blow a trick.

A: 6 - They have shown a double fit. Your partner has a singleton in Hearts. By leading them, when you get back on lead with the Ace of Spades you'll be able to give him a ruff.
