 Keycard Blackwood by Matthias Huberschwiller

In this edition of Slams, we will have another look at our dear friend Blackwood, with the 5 keycards being the 4 Aces and the King of Trumps.

Normally, you should know how to respond to it. We're going to look into how the auction progresses after the response.

Remember the responses to 4NT, when a trump suit is agreed:

4NT -
5 - 3 or 0 keys
5 - 4 or 1 key(s)
5 - 2 keys without the Queen of trumps
5 - 2 keys with the Queen of trumps

Q: 1 - What do you bid as South?
SouthWestNorthEast

?

 Your choice:
A: 5 - Two keycards and the Queen of Spades. No I have not gone crazy.

When you have a 10-card fit, act as if you have the Queen of trumps, since you won't need it.

 Your choice:
A: 5 - You need to stop, even with 9 trumps. It's not a good bet to play in slam with a keycard and the Queen of trumps missing.

Q: 3 - What do you bid as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass3Pass
4 NTPass5Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 6 - You have all the keycards and the Queen of trumps, but you don't have enough to go beyond a small slam. You don't have enough strength to hope for 13 tricks, because your partner doesn't have a very strong hand.

For the grand slam to be acceptable, you would need your partner to hold, along with his two Aces, the King of Diamonds and a doubleton Heart, and even with that you could go down.
And with all of this, your partner might have forced you to game instead of inviting.

 Your choice:
A: 5 NT - This time you can easily visualize a grand slam: You need your partner to have the King of Diamonds in addition to his two keycards.

5 NT is asking partner to bid his Kings. You'll know soon enough.

 Your choice:
A: 6 - You are missing a keycard and the Queen of Trumps, why go to slam?

The 10th trump makes the difference. Slam becomes a good bet, since there's a good chance that the Queen will fall.
