No-Trump Slam Bidding by Matthias Huberschwiller

In this edition, we will look at slam bidding with no-turmp hands.

With two balanced hands, it is usually a matter of points. There is no Blackwood since 4NT is quantitative.

And it would be useless, when you have 33 HCPs on your side, since you cannot be missing two Aces!

Good luck.

Question 1

  Your Hand
 A 6
 K 6 2
 K Q 9 2
 A 10 4 2

Q: 1 - What do you bid as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1 NTPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 4 NT - With 16-17 HCPs opposite a 1NT opener, you must use a Quantitative 4 NT to ask your partner for his opinion.

It means "Partner, I want to go to slam. Do you have a minimum or a maximum opener?".

Question 2

  Your Hand
 A 6
 K 6 5 2
 K Q 6
 A Q 3 2

Q: 2 - What do you bid as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1 NTPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2 - Yes you have the strength to go to 6 NT, but you must start with Stayman, since it will probably be easier to play in a major fit.

Question 3

  Your Hand
 A 9 3
 K 6 2
 Q 9 6 2
 8 4 2

Q: 3 - What do you bid as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--2Pass
2Pass2NTPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3 NT - Nine points opposite 22-23 HCPs is not enough to go to slam.

If your partner had 24 or more points, he would have bid 3 NT instead of 2 NT.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 K Q J 10
 A 6 5 2
 K 6
 A 6 2

Q: 4 - What do you bid as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
1 NTPass4 NTPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 6 NT - Your partner is asking for your point count.

With a maximum hand for the 1 NT opener, you must go to slam.

You have no major fit (your partner did not use Stayman), so bid 6 NT.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 K 6 2
 Q 6 2
 A Q 6 2
 K Q 9

Q: 5 - What do you bid as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
1 NTPass4 NTPass
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass - With 15 you always pass. With 17 you always accept slam.

With 16 it depends on the quality of your points.

Here with a 4-3-3-3 shape, your hand is not so good. You'd better pass and refuse the invitation.

Question 6

  Your Hand
 K Q J
 A Q 6
 7 3
 A 10 9 6 2

Q: 6 - What do you bid as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
1 NTPass4 NTPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 6 - Here you have a good 16 points with a 5-card minor. It's time to accept the invitation.

But you can do even better, by inviting partner to play in 6 instead of 6 NT. If your partner has a Club fit, he'll pass. Otherwise he will go back to 6 NT.
