4th Suit Forcing by Matthias Huberschwiller

In this quiz we will learn about Fourth-suit-forcing.

What is it?

When your side has bid three suits, bidding the last suit is not a natural bid. It shows strength (game values) and says "Partner I need further description of your hand to conclude".

There are two types of hands with which you use it:
- Game hands when you don't know which game you should be in.
- Slam hands, to be able to make a forcing fit bid.

Q: 1 - What do you bid as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass

 Your choice:
A: 2 - Bidding Hearts again would show six of them and a weak hand.

You belong in game, but which one? You could play 4 (if you partner has three), 3 NT (if he has a Diamond stopper), or even 5 if he has neither.

Fourth-suit-forcing will help you find out.

 Your choice:
A: 3 - The reason you used Fourth-suit-forcing was to agree Spades as trumps and show slam ambitions.

If you had bid 3 directly over 1, you would have been inviting game. Bidding 3 now, after Fourth-suit-forcing shows a Spade fit and slam ambitions. Partner will cue-bid a control or bid Blackwood if he has all the suits controlled.
