Menu Vu-Bridge | Play like a Champion!

Your partner has led by Matthias Huberschwiller

Your partner has led against a suit contract.

The dummy goes down, declarer asks for a small card and it is your turn. Just like against a No-trump contract, you will often play your highest in third seat.

It is up to you to choose your card depending on the situation.

Question 1

  Dummy:
10 7 5 4
J 8 2
K 9 6 2
A 5
  Your Hand
 K 6 3
 9 6 3
 A 3
 J 9 8 6 4

Q: 1 - You are East. Your partner leads the 2.

Declarer plays the 4 from dummy.

What card do you play as East?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass2Pass
4PassPassPass

 Your choice:
A: K – Your partner has led the 2, which promises an honor in the suit. By playing the King, you can establish your partner’s Queen.

Even if he has only the Jack, you would not give away anything because declarer will always win his Ace and Queen behind your King.

Question 2

  Dummy:
Q 6 2
8 7 3
8 5
K 9 6 3 2
  Your Hand
 K 4 3
 K 10 6 2
 10 5 4
 A 8 7

Q: 2 - You are East. Your partner leads the 9.

Declarer plays the 3 from dummy.

What card do you play as East?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass2Pass
4PassPassPass

 Your choice:
A: 2 – Partner’s lead comes from a suit in which he has no honor; he probably has a doubleton.

As you know that declarer has Ace-Queen-Jack, it is of no interest to play the King. As he is likely to have problems getting back to dummy to repeat the Heart finesse, you must not make life easy for him by playing the King.

Question 3

  Dummy:
K 6 3 2
A J 9 8
9 5
K 4 3
  Your Hand
 J 8 7 4
 6 3
 K J 6 5
 A 6 2

Q: 3 - You are East. Your partner leads the J.

Declarer plays the 3 from dummy.

What card do you play as East?
SouthWestNorthEast
1 NTPass2Pass
2Pass4Pass
PassPass

 Your choice:
A: 6 – You know that declarer has the Q. If you play the Ace immediately, you will establish two tricks for him immediately. You also know that the Queen cannot be a singleton as South has opened 1NT.

You need to play the 6, thus encouraging your partner to continue the suit when he gets on lead.

Question 4

  Dummy:
5 4
K 7 3 2
A 6 3
Q 10 9 8
  Your Hand
 Q 6 5 2
 8 4
 K 9 2
 J 7 6 5

Q: 4 - You are East. Your partner leads the 4.

Declarer plays the A from dummy.

What card do you play as East?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass3Pass
4PassPassPass

 Your choice:
A: 9 – You will not waste an honor given that you have three Diamonds. But you do need to be careful: If your partner gets back on lead, you need to help him.

You need to play the 9 to encourage him to continue the suit when he gets in.

Question 5

  Dummy:
K 6 5 3 2
6
Q 8 4 2
J 5 3
  Your Hand
 8
 9 7 6 2
 K J 9 3
 9 8 4 2

Q: 5 - You are East. Your partner leads the A.

Declarer plays the 6 from dummy.

What card do you play as East?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass4Pass
PassPass

 Your choice:
A: 9 – Hearts are without future, given that dummy has only one.

Encouraging or discouraging in the suit is of no interest. But you must try to help your partner find out which suit he should play next. You need to give him a suit preference signal.

So, you need to play your highest Heart in order to signal your preference for Diamonds, the highest of the remaining suits.
