Menu Vu-Bridge | Play like a Champion!

Your partner has led by Matthias Huberschwiller

Your partner has led against a No-trump contract.

Dummy comes down and after declarer has played the first card from dummy, it is your turn. The principle is to play your highest card in third seat.

It is up to you to adapt the choice of your card depending on the situation.

Question 1

  Dummy:
10 6 2
J 8 2
K 9 6 2
A 5 2
  Your Hand
 K 9 4
 9 6 3
 J 10 8 5
 8 7 4

Q: 1 - You are East. Your partner leads the 3.

Declarer plays the 2 from dummy.

Which card do you play as East?

 Your choice:
A: K – You need to play your highest card in third seat. If you play a small Spade, the declarer will certainly be able to win a trick with a small card. It is correct to play the King – even if declarer has the Ace, this could establish tricks for your partner.

Question 2

  Dummy:
A 6 3
10 5 4
A J 3
J 8 5 4
  Your Hand
 J 7 4
 K 3
 9 6 5 2
 7 6 3 2

Q: 2 - You are East. Your partner leads the Q.

Declarer plays the 4 from dummy.

Which card do you play as East?

 Your choice:
A: K – Even if the King and Queen are equivalent, you need to immediately play the King. Do you know why?

If you play a small Heart and declarer wins with his Ace, you will be blocked in your hand at the second Heart round with no chance of putting your partner on lead. By playing the King immediately, you unblock the suit. This unblocking play is for the defense what the principle of playing honors from the short side first is for the declarer.

Question 3

 J 8 6 2
 Q 10 6

Q: 3 - You are East. Your partner leads the 4.

Declarer plays the 2 from dummy.

 Your choice:
A: 10 – In third seat, you need to play a high card to force declarer to win with an honor, but you must not play the highest card without thinking.

Here, you see the J in dummy and you have the Queen and ten behind it. Therefore, you need to play the 10 on dummy’s small card and finesse against the Jack.

Question 4

  Dummy:
Q 3 2
A 5 2
K J 6 3 2
9 5
  Your Hand
 A 9 4
 J 8 7 6
 5 4
 10 8 3 2

Q: 4 - You are East. Your partner leads the 6.

Declarer plays the 2 from dummy.

Which card do you play as East?
SouthWestNorthEast

 Your choice:
A: 9 – Just like in the previous question, you have a tenace (Ace-Nine) behind dummy’s Queen. You need to finesse by playing the nine when declarer plays a small card from dummy.

It is true that declarer will most likely win this trick, but this does not matter. If you play the Ace immediately, you risk establishing dummy’s Queen.

For example, if declarer has King-Eight in Spades, if you put up the Ace you establish two tricks for him. If, on the contrary, you play the nine, declarer can win with his King but later partner can lead the J and you can capture dummy’s Queen.

Question 5

  Dummy:
9 8 5
K 6
K 6 5 4
A J 10 2
  Your Hand
 Q J 3
 8 7 3 2
 Q 9
 9 8 4 3

Q: 5 - You are East. Your partner leads the 4.

Declarer plays the 5 from dummy.

Which card do you play as East?

 Your choice:
A: J – When you have equivalent honors and you are in third seat you need to play the smallest.

Your partner will know that you can have the Queen if you play the Jack, but if you play the Queen he will know that you DON’T have the Jack. Like this he can deduce the distribution of the suit much easier.
