Bid a hand by Matthias Huberschwiller

In each edition of Slams, you’ll find a quiz in which you have to do the full bidding sequence with one hand.

We suggest that you do the first quiz first because the things treated each time will be useful for reaching the right contract.

Now, it’s your bid!

If you were 5-5, you’d need to start with Spades.

Question 2

  Your Hand
 Q 9 6 2
 J 4 3 2
 A K 4
 6 2

Q: 2 - Your partner has no Heart fit and has shown four cards in Spades.

What is your bid as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3 – You have four cards in your partner’s second suit, you have found a fit in a major.

You need to show partner that you have a fit, showing also your range of points.

With the doubleton in Clubs which gives you one point for distribution, you can give your hand 11 points, which means that you are to strong for a simple raise to 2 (which shows 6-10 points).

Therefore, you need to raise to the three-level, showing 11-12 points (HCP plus distribution).

Question 4

  Your Hand
 Q 9 6 2
 J 4 3 2
 A K 4
 6 2

Q: 4 - What is your bid as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass1Pass
3Pass4NTPass
5Pass5Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass – Over your answer to RKCB, your partner has bid 5.

This is a firm decision to stop there. It is an IMPERATIVE. Two keycards are missing.

Remember: The one who has asked for aces becomes the captain of the sequence. He is the one who will chose the final contract. ONLY HIM. You need to respect his decision.

Your partner’s hand was:
KJ54
KQ6
2
AKQ54

With two missing Aces, it would have been impossible to win a slam.
