Second bid from responder by Pedro Durão

#img#

We will test the second bid from responder after a minor suit opening.

Question 1

  Your Hand
 A K 10 8
 K 8 6
 K 5 3 2
 J 5

Q: 1 - What should we bid ?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass1NTPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3NT - The only sensible bid. We have enough points for game and a major fit hasn't materialized. There is no practical use to support partner in diamonds and also 3 would be non-forcing.

Question 2

  Your Hand
 A Q J 7 4
 K 8
 K 8 3 2
 J 7

Q: 2 - What should we bid ?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass1NTPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2 - With enough points for game we could try 3NT, but it's better to explore the possiblity of a 5-3 fit in spades. We need to give partner the opportunity to bid again, but he can't be allowed to pass. 3, 3 and also 2NT wouldn't be forcing and he could pass.

Question 3

  Your Hand
 A 10 7 4 3
 Q J 3 2
 3
 J 8 6

Q: 3 - What should we bid ?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass2NTPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3 - Here we also want to explore the possibility of a fit in the majors (5-3 in spades or 4-4 in hearts). So the best is a forcing bid that partner cannot pass. It must be a new minor suit, so in this case it will be in diamonds because partner opened in clubs. 3 would also show partner 5 spades and 4 hearts but using the New Minor Forcing (NMF) with 3 is definitely the best.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 K 2
 Q J 10 9 8 7
 3
 J 8 6 4

Q: 4 - What should we bid ?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass2NTPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 4 - No need to complicate the auction here. Since partner promised 18-19 points with his 2NT bid we have enough points for game and a fit is already found. Partner showed a balanced hand so he has at least 2 hearts. We should simply bid game.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 A K 2
 K J 8 7 6 5
 A 9 5
 8

Q: 5 - What should we bid ?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2- This last one is a little bit tricky. We have 6 hearts and want to tell partner about it, but 2 and 3 are not forcing and partner can pass. 4 is very risky because partner may have zero cards in the suit. We need to ask partner to bid again and 2 is a new suit so he cannot pass. If he bid's 2 we bid game in hearts.
If he bids something else we repeat our hearts with 3 but now he knows we have more than 12 points and he needs to bid game.
