We will test some competitive auctions.

Question 1

  Your Hand
 10
 A 8 7 6 5
 9 7 6 5
 4 3 2

Q: 1 - Partner opened the bidding . What should we bid ?
SouthWestNorthEast
--11
?

 Your choice:
A: 4 - With 10 or more trumps assured we should apply "The Law of Total Tricks" of Larry Cohen that indicates we should be safe offering a number of tricks that equals our number of trumps.

The idea is if partner is strong we may make 4, if he is weak surely the opponents would be able to make a contract in their suit.

Of course vulnerability will play a part in this kind of decisions.

Q: 2 - Partner opened the bidding .What should we bid ?
SouthWestNorthEast
--11
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass- Everything is bad in this game, we lack points and our hand is too balanced. We will just say something if partner forces us, for example with a double.

Q: 3 - Partner opened the bidding .What should we bid ?

 Your choice:
A: 2NT- It would also be possible to bid 2, but 2NT is a better description of our hand, essentially because we have good stoppers in spades.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 K 8 4 3
 9 8
 A J 6
 Q 8 6 3

Q: 5 - This time, it was the opponents that opened the auction, our partner made an overcall in 1. What should we bid ?
SouthWestNorthEast
-11Double
?

 Your choice:
A: 1NT - With 10 points we want to give some "life signals" in the auction. Since we have stoppers in the opponents suits this seems the most adequate bid.

Bidding spades would be unreasonable since our right opponent probably has 4 cards because of his double.

Question 6

  Your Hand
 K 9 8 4
 A 9 8 5
 A J
 9 8 6

Q: 6 - Opponents started the bidding and our partner made an overcall. What should we bid ?
SouthWestNorthEast
-11Double
?

 Your choice:
A: 2 - We have a good fit with partner and more than 10 points.

To transmit this information we need to use the cuebid, bidding the opponent suit.

We hope partner will make the best decision about the final contract.

Question 7

  Your Hand
 K 9 8
 10 9 8 5
 6
 Q 8 6 5 4

Q: 7 - Opponents started the bidding and our partner made an overcall. What should we bid ?
SouthWestNorthEast
-11Double
?

 Your choice:
A: 3 - Again we have a good fit with partner, but this time with a weak hand it's better to bid 3 than 2 to clarify our strengh.

A bid of 2 would mean 6-10 DH points and we might have just a 3- card support.

This game is very different.

 K J 4
 J 6 5

SouthWestNorthEast
122Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3 - This cuebid doesn't have as objective to show a fit with partner, but to ask him for a stopper in the opponent suit in order to try to play 3NT.
