 Light Opening Bids by David

In this brief quiz, we will look at the decision you have to make when considering a light opening bid at the one-level.

See how you fare...

Question 1

  Your Hand
 K 6
 J 9 7 6 2
 K 8 2
 A 6 2

Q: 1 - Suppose no-one is vulnerable and you hold this hand in the second seat. Your RHO passes. Will you open the bidding or not?
SouthWestNorthEast
---Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass. It would not be a mistake to open and some players would take that path. There are some pointers to suggest passing instead.

You are in the second seat. (In the third seat, you would open the bidding on this hand). The suit of your potential opening bid is weak. If you are outbid, perhaps in spades, you will not want your partner to lead a heart from such as A x or K x.

Question 2

  Your Hand
 K J 9 7 2
 Q J 8 5 2
 K 4
 10

Q: 2 - You are in first seat and only the opponents are vulnerable. Would you open the bidding?
SouthWestNorthEast
?--

 Your choice:
A: Pass. It is easier to describe a hand like this by passing initially. You hope that you will be able to enter later.

Suppose there are three passes and your RHO opens 1 or 1. You will then be able to make a Michaels cue-bid, (2 or 2) showing both the majors. Partner will then have a good picture of your hand, bearing in mind that you did not have enough to open the bidding.

Question 3

  Your Hand
 K Q J 9 4
 10 8 2
 A 9 7 2
 J

Q: 3 - No-one is vulnerable and you are first to speak. What action will you take?
SouthWestNorthEast
?--

 Your choice:
A: 1. Even though the J is not worth much, you have a good suit that is worth mentioning. It is a clear-cut decision to open 1 on such a hand.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 A J 9 7 5 2
 Q 9 2
 K 10 7
 6

Q: 4 - Both sides are vulnerable. Your RHO passes and you must decide what to do in second seat.
SouthWestNorthEast
---Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 1. All your points are working and you are well worth an opening bid of 1.

Even if your range for a weak-two bid is nominally 6-10, do not consider making such a bid on a hand of this playing strength.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 10 8 6 4 2
 K 2
 J
 A K 10 7 2

Q: 5 - Only your side is vulnerable. What action will you take in first seat?
SouthWestNorthEast
?--

 Your choice:
A: 1. You would often open 1 with this shape. Here, the spades are flimsy and you would rather mention the clubs first. If the opponents win the auction, you would rather have a club lead than a spade lead.

Question 6

  Your Hand
 A Q 7 4
 J 9 5 2
 A 4
 9 7 2

Q: 6 - Neither side is vulnerable, and there are two passes in front of you. What action will you take in the third seat?
SouthWestNorthEast
--PassPass
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass. It is often right to open on 11 HCPs, particularly in the third seat. Here, though, you would have to open 1 and you have only three spot-cards in the suit.

It's quite likely that the opponents will win the auction and you do not want to encourage partner to lead a club, possibly away from some honor or other. The best action is to pass.
