Bidding Quiz: Responding After a Double by David

In the quiz, we will look at how you should bid when your partner has opened one of a suit and your RHO has made a take-out double.

You will be sitting South, as usual.

Question 1

  Your Hand
 Q 9 7 2
 6 4
 K 10 7 3 2
 J 2

Q: 1 - What will you say here, over RHO's take-out double?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Dble
?

 Your choice:
A: 3. When you have a good fit for your partner, you should aim to remove the opponents' bidding space. Here, you would bid 3 rather than 2.

When you are both long in spades, the opponents will be short there. Consequently, they will have a good fit somewhere else. By removing bidding space, you can make it hard for them to find a fit, also to judge how high they should go.

Question 2

  Your Hand
 J 10 6 5
 A Q 5
 K 9 8 2
 7 4

Q: 2 - What will you bid on this one?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Dble
?

 Your choice:
A: 2NT. As we saw on the previous problem, 3 would be pre-emptive and show a fairly weak hand with 4-card support. You cannot make the same bid when you have game-try values.

For many decades, the standard way to invite a game is to bid 2NT over the double.

Question 3

  Your Hand
 8 3 2
 A J 6
 K 8 2
 K 9 7 6

Q: 3 - This time, partner opens 1 and the next player doubles. What will you say?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Dble
?

 Your choice:
A: Redouble. You are too strong for 2 or a pre-emptive 3. A response of 2NT requires 4-card trump support. So, you must start by showing a good point-count, with a redouble. You will bid 2 or 3 later, having already shown at least 10 HCP.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 A J 7 6 2
 K 2
 J 8 2
 K 10 3

Q: 4 - What will you bid on this hand when your partner's 1 has been doubled for take-out?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Dble
?

 Your choice:
A: 1. The meaning of 1 is just the same as it would have been if there had been no take-out double. It shows at least four spades and is forcing (unless you are a passed hand). The bidding can then proceed just as it would without the double.

It will rarely be the case that your best strategy is to double the opponents at the one-level, so don't waste any time in finding your own best spot.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 8 7 2
 9
 A Q J 7 6 2
 10 6 5

Q: 5 - What bid will you make now?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Dble
?

 Your choice:
A: 2. A response of 1 would be forcing, and you could use such a bid to launch any strong hand. It makes sense that such as 2 and 3 are weak and pre-emptive.

By taking away bidding space, you aim to make it difficult for the opponents to judge their best trump suit and level.

Question 6

  Your Hand
 5 2
 K J 9 8 2
 9 3
 A 9 8 5

Q: 6 - What is your intention on this responding hand?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Dble
?

 Your choice:
A: 4. In rough terms, you should aim to compete to the level dictated by your total trump holding. Here, partner has (at least) five hearts, and you can add five more.

Not much harm can come to you if you are doubled at the four-level (although you should keep an eye on the vulnerability). If you go down, you can be sure that the opponents had a worthwhile contract somewhere.
