Transfers Opposite 2NT by David Bird

When your partner opens 2NT and you have a 5-card or longer major, you will want to use a transfer response.

This will ensure that partner becomes the declarer in any contract played in your suit.

It will also allow you to continue to describe your hand.

Question 1

  Your Hand
 8 3
 A J 7 6 2
 5 4
 J 9 6 3

Q: 1 - What will you respond to partner's 2NT here?
SouthWestNorthEast
--2NTPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3. This is a transfer response, showing at least five hearts.

Question 2

  Your Hand
 8 3
 A J 7 6 2
 5 4
 J 9 6 3

Q: 2 - You have started with a transfer response, and partner has duly rebid 3. How will you continue?
SouthWestNorthEast
--2NTPass
3Pass3Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3NT. With 6 HCP opposite a 2NT opening, you want to play at the game-level.

Your partner's 3 rebid does not promise any heart support. He might still have only two hearts. You should bid 3NT next to 'offer a choice of games'.

Your partner will then generally pass 3NT with only two hearts and bid 4 when he has three or more hearts.

Question 3

  Your Hand
 A J 7 6
 A Q 3
 K 2
 A K 7 2

Q: 3 - Now we look at the situation from the opener's point of view. What action will you take next on this hand?
SouthWestNorthEast
--2NTPass
3Pass3Pass
3NTPass?

 Your choice:
A: 4. With 3-card heart support, you intend to play in hearts. On most such hearts, you would bid a simple 4 next. Here, though, you have a maximum with plenty of controls. You can indicate this with a control-bid of 4.

When partner has no intention of going beyond game, however strong you are, he will bid 4. Occasionally, though, he may now see that there is slam potential and bid accordingly. (It would be quite wrong for you to bid 4NT yourself, since partner might well hold only 5-6 HCP.)

Question 4

  Your Hand
 A 9 7 2
 K 2
 A Q J 6
 A K 6

Q: 4 - Now you have a very strong hand in support of partner's suit, with four trumps. What will you rebid?
SouthWestNorthEast
--2NTPass
3Pass?

 Your choice:
A: 4. You are strong enough to 'break the transfer'. In other words, you will insist on game, even in the rare circumstance when partner was intending to pass 3. (Note that many players treat a transfer response as forcing to game.)

Much more likely is the situation where your partner is close to considering a slam. When he seeds your transfer-break, he will be inspired to head slamwards.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 8 7 3
 A J 9 7 6 2
 J 7 2
 5

Q: 5 - What are your bidding plans on this one?
SouthWestNorthEast
--2NTPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3. You start with a transfer response. Most of the time, your partner will bid 3. You will then bid 4, having ensured that the contract will be played by the strong hand.

On this particular hand, it will make no difference if your partner breaks the transfer in some way. You will play in 4 anyway.

Question 6

  Your Hand
 8 4
 K Q J 7 6 2
 K 3
 Q 7 2

Q: 6 - You may wonder how to bid a responding hand such as this one, where you would probably like to bid Roman Keycard Blackwood, with hearts agreed.

One solution is to use 'Two-below transfers' (You can look them up on the internet). You bid four of the suit that is two below your own long suit.
SouthWestNorthEast
--2NTPass
4Pass4Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 4NT. After your two-below transfer (if you agree to play them), you can bid 4NT as Roman Keycard Blackwood.

With a 2NT opener opposite, you need not worry much that you might be missing the ace-king of one of the black suits.
