"The History of Time" by Marti Ronemus

As our Faithful Readers know, we try to not only help you improve your game, but ensure that you have a daily tidbit to help your conversation sparkle. Here's today's gem.

Have you ever wondered why "clockwise" runs from right to left? Well, back in the mists of time when sundials were all we had, the rotation of the earth moved the shadow from right to left. When clocks finally got hands, it only made sense for them to move from right to left.

What, you ask? Didn't clocks always have hands? No they did not. They chimed a bell. The word "clock," in fact, comes from medieval Latin "clocca," which means "bell."

And now, it's TIME for your quiz. Let's deal with interference.

Question 1

  Your Hand
 A 5 4 3 2
 A K J 9
 4 3
 7 4

Q: 1 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--11
?

 Your choice:
A: Double: While 1 wouldn't be incorrect (how's THAT for faint praise?), we like Double better. Because the Spades are so ratty, we'd like to give Pard a choice of suits.

Q: 2 - South:

 Your choice:
A: 2: You play Michaels Cuebids, don't you? If not, it's TIME to learn. We are promising five Hearts (the other major) and five of an unnamed minor. As to points? Either 10 or below, or a BIG hand.

Q: 3 - South:

?

 Your choice:
A: 2 No-trump: Same hand, different bidding. This TIME we get to use the Unusual Notrump, another BOGO bid. We are showing five-five in the two lower unbid suits. Same point count and shape as Michaels.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 Q J 10 9 8 3 2
 3
 6 5 4
 4 3

Q: 4 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--11
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: This hand is just too darn bad to pass with. Pard will know the story. If we had 6-plus pts., we would bid 1. This bid is also fairly safe, because after all, Pard did open. We love the Weak Jump Shift... yet another opportunity to bid lots with little. We would be a very Crummy Dummy.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 K Q J 4 3 2
 8
 4 3 2
 8 7 6

Q: 5 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--11
?

 Your choice:
A: 1: This hand is just too good to make a weak bid. We're going to bid 1, and Pard will know we have five. We'll tell him later that we have six.

And now, we hear the bell for our hand.
