"National Kite Month" by Marti Ronemus

Recently I saw a sky full of kites at a local park. If that doesn't make you smile... The trick champion kite flyers know is -- balance. The perfect mixture of kite shape, air lift, and other indefinable qualities make for success.

Today's hands give you a chance to fly high. We're going to see the same bidding sequence, and as opener, we're going to be asked to make the perfect third bid. Let's see what we can do.

Question 1

 A Q J 10 9 7 6
 A 3
 J 9 5

Q: 1 - The bidding will be the same on each of our five hands. Our third bid will be based on visualizing Pard's hand and how it fits with ours. Ready?

 Your choice:
A: 4: Pard's bid shows an opening hand and we need to be in game. We are going to insist on our suit. Why? It's an independent suit -- one we don't mind playing opposite a void. Anything but Hearts, we could end up as a Crummy Dummy.

Q: 2 - South again.

 Your choice:
A: 3: Unlike our last hand, we're a bid weaker and aren't so sure about game. Our Heart suit is still "independent", which is always good. 3 No-trump would be too off-the-wall. Let's make OUR problem our PARD'S problem!

Q: 3 - South again.

 Your choice:
A: 4: Every time Pard bids, our hand gets better. Notice this time our Heart suit is NOT independent. Pard's got at least five Spades. We might have a slam, and it's important that we indicate the strength of both our hand and our Spades.

Q: 4 - South again.

 Your choice:
A: 3: With all those quacks, this hand isn't going to sail very high in the sky. We've shown our six-card Heart suit. Now it's time to take a preference. We like a 5-2 split in Spades more than we like a 4-3 in Clubs. Pard can still park it in 3 No-trump. It's his problem now.

Question 5

Q: 5 - Last chance to fly high.

 Your choice:
A: 4: This is the toughest, isn't it? Our other choice would be 3 No-trumps which wouldn't be the worst thing ever. Our Club suit would be our transportation. BUT!! Where is our source of tricks? We think we're probably better off in a suit. We each have a distributional hand and you know what a mess THAT can be.
And now it's time to sail high with our hand. Bon voyage!
