"Int'l Whistlers' Week" by Marti Ronemus

Did you know that whistling is high on lists of annoying habits? Think about it. When you're with someone who whistles under their breath, don't you just want to grind your teeth? Have you ever been at the bridge table with someone who did that? Maddening.

Today we're going to tackle a maddening situation in bridge. Your partner makes a Dreaded Reverse, and it's up to you to respond. There are dozens of suggested methods and partnership agreements on the subject, so you and your partner talk this over. We are going to suggest the simplest. It may not be the very best method, but it's easy to remember and will give you a starting point if this is new to you. If you've already got this subject solved with your Pard, good for you! No whistling in the dark for you two. For the rest?

A simple non-jump of an old suit suggests you've got a minimum responding weak hand and serves as a yellow flag to the Reverser. A 2 No-trump is also a slow-down sign. Any other bid is forcing to game.

Q: 1 - Your Pard just made the dreaded reverse. Whistle a merry tune. South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass

?

 Your choice:
A: 4: Visualize Pard's hand. Probably five Diamonds, four hearts (first named suit always longer), and at least a strong intermediate hand. While we have a minimum responding hand, it's game going. We belong in game, so bid it. Is this a shut-out? No. It strongly suggests just what it is... game values with a fit.

Q: 2 - Pard annoyingly reverses again. South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: By jumping a level, we are forcing the auction to game and promising a six-card suit. Why not just bid game? Can Pard pass? In "normal" bidding, jumps in old suits are not forcing, but after a Reverse, they are. We don't want to bid No-trump on our own even though Pard has shown the minors. Let's work our way up. Pard will know we've got more than minimum and we are going to game.

Q: 3 - How about this one? What's your tweet? South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: This one is so weak we can barely hear it. Remember, we aren't placing the final contract. We are showing a Heart fit and warning Pard that we've got a crummy minimum. He might pass or he might go to game. He knows what we've got... 6-9 and a fit.

Q: 4 - Wet your whistle and bid:
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2 No-trump: Do we have game? It depends on how strong Pard's Reverse was. We want to make a weak bid but there's no old suit we can whistle. Our 2 No-trump bid says exactly that. Cool beans.

Question 5

 A 9 7 5
 9 8
 Q 9 7
 10 9 8 3

Q: 5 - Final chance to whistle while we work:
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: We have another weak hand, but a known eight-card fit with Pard's minor suit. We could bid 2 No-trump which also shows a weak hand, but it tends to deny a fit with either of Pard's suits. Plus we'd feel a little better with a Club stopper. Let's just show our fit and our dreadful hand.

And now, let's go play a hand.
