Menu Vu-Bridge | Play like a Champion!

"Roswell UFO Week" by Marti Ronemus

When I looked at my calendar of strange observances, I almost discarded this one, but then I was watching some players online. Folks, the only possible explanation for some of those bids and lines of play is indeed -- alien abduction. They do live among us and for some reason end up at the bridge table.

Let's try some bidding challenges and see just where you hail from.

(And thank you Eddie Kantar -- Kantarbridge.com -- for the ideas for this quiz. I assure you, folks, although he is far superior to the masses, he is NOT from Planet Zenon!)

Question 1

 A K 8 3 2
 A J

Q: 1 - As South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1 No-trumpPass
3Pass3Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 4: When Pard raised your Spades, his delayed support only promised two Spades. When we rebid our Hearts, we are telling Pard we are wildly distributional and not only have enough for game after his weak bid, but are hoping he has three Hearts. After he hears our 4 bid, he'll either leave it in Hearts with three card support, or correct to Spades. Up to him.

Q: 2 - South:

 Your choice:
A: 5: When we hear that 4 bid, it's like the mothership has landed. We however with our ten card Diamond fit will not be deterred. In the movies, the earthlings never just hand over the planet, and that's what a pass would be like.

**Alert!! This bid, "Jordan" is very precise showing 10-12 pts and four pieces of trump. It doesn't come up that often but when it does, it's "out of this world."

 Your choice:
A: 4: Knowing exactly what Pard has makes our choice fairly simple. With our nine-card trump fit and game points, where else can we land the mothership?

Question 4

 A Q 4
 A K Q 10 9 3

Q: 4 - South?:
SouthWestNorthEast
111 No-trumpPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3 No-trump: Folks, you can't save the universe with wimpy little bids. Pard's 1 No-trump bid was fabulous, just what you needed to hear. He showed a Spade stopper. Are we worried about the Hearts? Well, a little bid, but Pard's No-trump bid slightly suggested stoppers in the unbid suits, definitely Spades. With a strong minor suit like our Clubs, we want almost any excuse to play No-trump, and Pard gave it to us. Besides, no contract is too high if Pard has to play it.

Q: 5 - South:

 Your choice:
A: 4: What would Captain Kirk do? You've got some nice "stuff" for Pard, and for him to enter the auction at the three-level, he's got something special.

And it's time for our hand. We're going to defend, hoping the opponents are from outer space.
