 "Taco Day" by Marti Ronemus

Have you seen tacos lately? Fruit tacos, dessert tacos, fish tacos, veggie tacos. How many variations can there be, and at what point does it cease to be a taco?

I'm all for innovation and novelty, but there has to be a limit. It's like martinis -- any liquid in a V-shaped glass is now considered a martini. And anything edible in a crunchy shell is a taco.

And that goes for bidding, too. There are so many variations of almost every bidding treatment. Let's see what we can come up with today.

Question 1

  Your Hand
 Q J 10 8 7 6
 8 4
 J 8 2
 K 9

Q: 1 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--11
1Pass2 No-trumpPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 4: Some might have jumped to 2 at our first bid, using a Weak Jump Shift, but we think our hand is too good for that. We are promising five Spades. When Pard jumps to 2 No-trump, he is promising 18-19 points, putting some hot sauce on this concoction. We don't have a single reason to not go to game.

Question 2

 Q J 9
 Q 7 2
 Q 7 3

Q: 2 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--13
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: It's a great temptation to jump to 4 with this hand, and we wouldn't fault anyone who does. BUT!! Our Q is toast and the hand has so many queens and jacks that it quacks. No hot sauce on this one.

Q: 3 - South:

?

 Your choice:
A: 2: How pathetic. We probably have a big Heart fit, but the hand is just too bad to do anything other than the cheapest bid possible.

Q: 4 - South:

--23
?

 Your choice:
A: 4: When bidding over Pard's preempt, we've learned that point count isn't what it's all about. Bridge is a game of TRICKS, not points. In addition to the ninth trump, we've got at least four tricks in Hearts. With Pard's 5-1/2 tricks, that adds up to game.

Q: 5 - South:

?

 Your choice:
A: 5: Pard's double is for penalty-ish. We are expected to pass unless we have a very hot, crunchy hand. And we do, so we go for game.

And now, on to our hand.
