"It's All About Timing..." by Marti Ronemus

Two little "this day in history" events for you. Singly, they are interesting. Juxtaposed however, they are thought provoking.

1. In 1994, comedian Bobcat Goldthwait, while appearing on Leno, set his chair on fire because he thought "the show is moving too slow." He certainly speeded up the action with THAT little trick!
(Bridge Directors: Take Note!! That'll get slow players moving!)

2) In 1879, a constitutional amendment to prevent congressional pay raises was proposed. 203 years later, this week in 1992, it was finally passed. Where is Bobcat when you need him?

SO!! Let's move THIS along with a few quiz questions.

Question 1

 A Q 10
 6 5

Q: 1 - South:

?

 Your choice:
A: 3: A jump after a preempt is NOT weak, but rather invitational. We are saying we have a nice hand, and don't need a whole lot from Pard to make game. Remember, preempts are an attempt to rob you. We're not gonna let it happen!

 Your choice:
A: 4: This time we are setting the auction on fire. We need almost NOTHING from Pard to make game. Look at our shape! Our trump suit! Ask Bobcat for the matches.

Question 3

 A K Q 10 2
 8 7
 K Q 2
 A 3 2

Q: 3 - South: And now?
SouthWestNorthEast
---2
?

 Your choice:
A: Double: A jump overcall over a preempt is usually reserved for a strong hand with a six-card suit. We're going to take the Congressional approach of taking things VERY slowly by making the Big Hand Double first. When we announce our suit, Pard will know we've got a gigantic hand but not the six-carder

 K 8

Q: 4 - South: Another dealing with preempts question:
SouthWestNorthEast
---2
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: We like our friend, the Michaels Cuebid on this one. Let's show Pard our shape and let him choose which suit he likes. We could possibly be in trouble, but we don't like being robbed.

 K J 10 3 2

Q: 5 - South:

 Your choice:
A: Double: We like a Negative Double for this hand. We get to show both our suits, cheaply. When Pard picks one, we plan to pass.

And we're ready for our hand.
