 Suit Combinations by Matthias Huberschwiller

In this quiz, you will have five suits to play as declarer.

You can go from one hand to the other as many times as you want in the other suits.

How will you play these suit combinations for the required number of tricks?

Good luck!

Question 1

  Your Hand
N: A J 5 2

S: K 10 8 3

Q: 1 - How should you play this suit for four tricks?

 Your choice:
A: Cash the Ace, then run the Jack - You will have to finesse against the Queen one way or another with only eight cards.

Do you see the asymmetry of your holdings? You have the 8 in hand, which allows you to capture Queen-fourth in the East hand.

Therefore, play the Ace first (to catch a singleton Queen) and then run the Jack. If East has the Queen and covers, you will still have the 10 8 tenace to capture the 9 when East started with Q 9 x x.

Question 2

  Your Hand
N: A Q 10 5 2

S: 7 6 4 3

Q: 2 - How should you play this suit for four tricks?

 Your choice:
A: Cash the Ace, then low to the Queen - You need to hold your losses to one trick. The only impossible case is when East has K J x (x).

You need to cash the Ace first, to capture any singleton honor in the East hand and lose only one trick to K J doubleton. If nothing appears, you need to play low to the Queen, to lose only one trick when West started with K J x.

Question 3

  Your Hand
N: A Q 10 5 2

S: 6 4 3

Q: 3 - How should you play this suit for four tricks?

 Your choice:
A: Low to the Queen, then low to the 10 - You don't have a 100% safe play for four tricks, but you can improve your odds.

The normal line is to take the double finesse by playing low to the 10 first. But for four tricks, you need to start with a low one to the Queen, and then low to the 10. This way, you will lose only one trick when East has a singleton Jack, rather than two.

Question 4

  Your Hand
N: A J 5 2

S: K 9 4 3

Q: 4 - How should you play this suit for three tricks?

 Your choice:
A: Cash the Ace, then low to the 9 - You need to lose only one trick against Q 10 x x in either hand. To do that, you need to cash the Ace first (to capture any singleton honor), then play low to the 9.

If East plays low, inserting the 9 ensures you'll lose no more than one trick. If East discards, win the King and then lead to the Jack.

It would be bad to go down in a slam because your trump suit breaks 4-1! But be careful about safety plays at matchpoints. They can be costly.

Question 5

  Your Hand
N: A K 9 8

S: J 5 4

Q: 5 - How should you play this suit for four tricks?

 Your choice:
A: Run the Jack. If West covers with the Queen, win and lead low to the 9 - You need to take the double finesse, to make five tricks when the Queen and 10 are onside. You will also pick up a singleton 10 offside.
