Bidding quiz - Raising 1H or 1S by David Bird

In this bidding quiz, we will be looking at the first response to an opening bid of 1♥ or 1♠.

When partner opens 1♥ or 1♠, you can give a single raise with 3-card support. Playing standard methods, a double raise (1♥-3♥) shows a stronger hand (around 10-11 HCPs) and 4-card support. A game raise (1♥-4♥) is partly pre-emptive. It suggests a shapely hand of around 7-10 HCPs, often with 5-card support.

Many players like to use a Jacoby 2NT response when they have at least 4-card support and a game-going hand. (Look it up on the internet if this is an unfamiliar idea.)

A: 2♥. Responding 1♠ instead is a clear mistake. If partner then rebid 2♣ or 2♦, you would have to correct to 2♥ and partner would not even know that you had 3-card support.

Apart from that, a good partner will often raise 1♠ to 2♠ with only three spades. You would then be past the safety zone of 2♥.

A: 3♠. You are too strong to bid 2♠. With four-card support, you can describe your hand well with 3♠. This is non-forcing but invitational.

A: 4♠. You have only 9 HCP, but a more shapely hand. If you are familiar with the ‘losing trick count’, you will know that the previous hand contained 8 losers and this one has only 7 (you cannot count a 3rd-round loser in spades, with a 5-5 fit).

You are easily worth a raise to 4♠, which shows good shape but a moderate point-count.

A: 2♠. There are two reasons why you should not raise to 3♠. Firstly, you do not have 4-card support. Secondly, your hand is somewhat too weak. Respond just 2♠. If partner makes any sort of game-try, you will accept the invitation.
