Slam Auction 1 by David Bird

In this quiz, we will step through a typical slam auction, asking you to choose a bid at various stages.

Sometimes you will be South, and at others you will be North.

Question 1

  Your Hand
 8 7
 A Q J 8 5 3
 A K 7
 K 6

Q: 1 - The first two bids of the auction are shown below. What will you rebid?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3. You are much too strong for a 2 rebid, which would suggest around 11-14 HCP. Your hand could be described as 'a good 3 rebid'.

Question 2

  Your Hand
 A K 10 9 4
 9 6 2
 J 4
 A 10 7

Q: 2 - You are North and the bidding starts as shown below. What will you bid next?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
3Pass?

 Your choice:
A: 4, You have found a good trump suit in hearts, so there is no point bidding your spades again (3 would be natural and forcing).

Your hand will make a valuable dummy opposite South's bidding. 4 now would therefore be an underbid. You should suggest a slam with a control bid of 4. This is not natural. It agrees hearts as trumps and shows the A or K (sometimes shortness in clubs).

Question 3

  Your Hand
 8 7
 A Q J 8 5 3
 A K 7
 K 6

Q: 3 - You are South and the bidding has so far taken this turn. What will you bid next?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
3Pass4Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 4. When you have jump-rebid in hearts, partner's 4 bid is not natural. It is much more useful as a control-bid that agrees your suit and suggests a slam. You are happy to encourage such a move and continue with a control-bid of your own: 4 (showing the A or K).

Although a control bid is sometimes made on shortness, this is not so useful when the shortness lies in the hand with the long trumps.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 A K 10 9 4
 9 6 2
 J 4
 A 10 7

Q: 4 - What will you bid on this North hand, after the start shown below?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
3Pass4Pass
4Pass?

 Your choice:
A: 4NT. Once you hear that partner has a diamond control, you are entitled to bid Roman Keycard Blackwood on your hand.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 8 7
 A Q J 8 5 3
 A K 7
 K 6

Q: 5 - You are South and the bidding so far is shown below. What will you bid now?
SouthWestNorthEast
1-Pass1Pass
3Pass4Pass
4Pass4NTPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 5. Partner's 4NT was Roman Keycard Blackwood. Your response with two keycards (the red aces) and the Q is 5. When you make this response, your partner closes the auction in 6. These were the two hands:

8 7                           A K 10 9 4
A Q J 8 5 3               9 6 2
A K 7                         J 4
K 6                           A 10 7

As you can see, it is an excellent slam. If South holds the K, you might make an overtrick.
