 Minor-suit Transfers by David Bird

Opposite a 1NT opening, transfer responses of 2 (for hearts) and 2 (for spades) are indispensable.

You can also use 2 as a transfer for clubs and 2NT as a transfer for diamonds. As you can see, there is space for two different responses.

The first step, as in 1NT - 2 - 2NT, is used to show a good fit for partner's minor, usually three cards to an honor. This may allow the responder to bid a low point-count game. Otherwise, opener honors the transfer, bidding three of the indicated suit.

Q: 1 - How will you respond to 1NT here?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1NTPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2. You're showing at least a six-card club suit. If partner rebids 2NT to show a good fit, you will go to 3NT in the expectation of six club tricks. If instead partner rebids just 3, you will pass.

Q: 2 - How will you bid this hand opposite a 1NT opening?
SouthWestNorthEast

?

Q: 3 - How are you intending to bid this hand?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1NTPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2. You start with a minor-suit transfer to show your long club suit. Whether or not partner shows a fit for clubs, you will continue with 3, which shows a SINGLETON. If instead you had four hearts and six clubs, you would have started with Stayman.

Q: 4 - What is your bidding plan on this hand?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1NTPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3NT. With a suit this good, you do not need to find partner with a positive response to a transfer.

3NT is the game to play, since you could easily have at least three losers in 5.

 Your choice:
A: 4NT. Partner has shown you a singleton spade opposite your ace. You have plenty of controls and it seems that a slam will be very good. You bid RKCB to check on the keycard position.
