Show your strength and distribution by Frank Stewart

In Bridge, bidding is used to show your strength and distribution.

What are the correct bids in these five exaamples?

Question 1

  Your Hand
 8 7 4
 A 7 5 4 3
 4 2
 A 3 2

Q: 1 - What do you bid next as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: Though a pass might be a winning action, the correct bid is two diamonds. Partner suggests longer diamonds. Your "false preference" will usually find your better trump suit and keep the bidding alive in case you have a game. (If he opened one diamond on A 3 2, 2, K 10 6 3, K Q 7 6 5, the outcome may show him why that is a bad idea.)

Question 2

  Your Hand
 Q J 9 8 4
 A Q 7
 8 5 4
 A 6

Q: 2 - What do you bid next as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
2NT*Pass3Pass
?

2NT...conventional forcing raise. (A bid of three spades would invite game.)

 Your choice:
A: 3: Partner's second bid conventionally shows a diamond singleton, hence all your values are useful. Even if he has minimum high-card values, you may make a slam. He could hold A K 10 5 3, K 6 5, 2, K 5 4 3. Bid three hearts to show a side ace.

Question 3

  Your Hand
 A K J 7 6 2
 A Q
 7 3
 9 7 4

Q: 3 - What do you bid next as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass2Pass
2Pass3Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: Your rebid of two spades didn't promise a six-card suit, so a bid of three spades would not be wrong. But you would have raised to three hearts on many hands with three-card support, and your A-Q are powerful cards that partner would like to hear about. Bid three hearts.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 10 9
 Q 9 4 3
 K 7 5
 A Q 7 5

Q: 4 - What do you bid as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--12
?

 Your choice:
A: Double: You have too few values to bid three clubs, which might land you at a pushy game, but you need to show some values. Your best action is a negative double, suggesting at least a fair hand with heart length and either club length or diamond support. Discuss negative doubles with your partner.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 K 8 7
 A Q J
 K 9 8 4
 J 10 5

Q: 5 - What do you bid next as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
1NTPass3Pass
3Pass4Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 4: Apparently, partner is interested in big things. Since almost all your points lie in his suits, your hand is promising. Cue-bid four hearts. If partner has a hand such as A Q J 6 5, K 10 6 5, A Q 7, 4, he will bid a slam.
