Sometimes, you have a fit and need to find the right level, some other times you know if you want to play game or not but you first need to find the right strain and sometimes both are not so easy to decide upon. What will it be in these five examples? Test yourself!

Question 1

  Your Hand
 K J 10 5
 10 8 4
 K Q 2
 J 6 5

Q: 1 - What do you bid next as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass: You responded in a new suit because you judged your hand as a bit too strong for a raise to two hearts. Your partner has minimum values. He suggests four-card spade support but may have only three. I would be discouraged. The hand has too many losers to try for game.

Question 2

  Your Hand
 Q 8
 K 10 7 6 5 4
 Q 10
 9 5 4

Q: 2 - What do you answer as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1NTPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: "Transfer" responses, which all expert pairs use in a variety of situations, make this hand easy to handle. Bid two diamonds, asking partner to bid two hearts. Then raise to three hearts to show a six-card suit and game-invitational values. If you don't use transfers, read up on them and discuss them with your partner.

Question 3

  Your Hand
 J 8 7 6 2
 4 3
 Q J 10
 K 10 4

Q: 3 - What do you bid next as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: Take a "false preference" to two hearts. Partner should expect only a doubleton heart; if you had six to nine points with true support, you would have raised directly. If he has five hearts and four diamonds, he will often do as well or better at hearts. Game is still possible, so give him another chance.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 K Q
 K J 9 6 5
 A J 6 2
 10 4

Q: 4 - What do you bid next as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
2Pass2Pass
3Pass3Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: If partner had three-card heart support, he would often have raised directly to three hearts. His delayed heart preference suggests a doubleton honor (and no stopper in clubs, the unbid suit). Bid three spades. Partner may have A J 7 6 5 3, Q 4, K Q 3, 8 2.

SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass2Pass

 Your choice:
