Proceed by elimination by Frank Stewart

When you don't have an obvious bid at hand, you'll have to proceed by elimination of the others.

What will it be this week?

Test your skills with these five exemples.

Question 1

  Your Hand
 A 10
 K 3
 A 10 6 5
 J 10 9 7 4

Q: 1 - What do you bid next as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 1NT: Some players might have avoided rebid problems by not opening, but your hand has a five-card suit and three tens. Having opened, bid 1NT to slow things down. A few players would have opened one diamond and would try two clubs now. That would be a dangerous sequence, both distorting the shape and failing to limit the strength.

Question 2

 A K Q

Q: 2 - What do you bid next as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
2Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: Though the deal may be a misfit, you have too many prime values to stop below game. Bid three clubs, forcing. If partner bids 3NT next, pass and wish him well. If he rebids three spades, raise to four. If he shows heart tolerance by bidding three hearts next, bid four hearts.

Question 3

  Your Hand
 7 6 2
 K
 A 6 5
 A K Q 10 5 4

Q: 3 - What do you answer as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: If partner holds a minimum such as A 4 3, A Q J 6 5, 4 3 2, J 3, you can probably make 7NT. I would be inclined to jump-shift to three clubs, alerting him that slam is possible so he can cooperate with a suitable hand. If you respond two clubs, you will have to "catch up" later and may have to make a slam decision without his input.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 A K 9 6 4
 J 2
 K Q 4
 7 6 3

Q: 4 - What do you bid next as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass2Pass
2Pass3Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: You have only one feasible call. You can't rebid the spades again or bid 3NT with weak clubs, nor should you raise diamonds with three-card support. Bid three hearts. Partner can't expect better support; with three-card support, you might have bid three hearts at your second turn.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 10 8 5 3
 K 9 8 2
 A 9 4
 J 9

Q: 5 - What do you bid next as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--2*Pass
2Pass2NTPass
?

*strong, artificial

 Your choice:
A: Partner has a balanced 23 or 24 points, maybe a good 22. Bid three clubs, Stayman. If he shows a four-card major next, you will have a close decision: You can settle for game or raise to five of his suit to invite slam. If he bids three diamonds to deny a major, you can bid 4NT to invite.
