 Headache? by Frank Stewart

Some of today's questions may give you a headache!

Others are more straight forward.

See how you fare!

Question 1

  Your Hand
 A Q 10 5
 Q 6
 7 3
 A K 9 7 2

Q: 1 - What do you answer as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: The correct response is two clubs. Since you have plenty of ammunition, you can show your suits in the logical order: longest first. If partner rebids two hearts, you'll bid an economical two spades next. With a weaker hand such as A J 10 5, Q 6, 7 3, K 9 7 3 2, to respond one spade, seeking a fit in the major suit, would be best.

Question 2

  Your Hand
 Q
 A J 9 8
 K Q 9 5 3
 A 4 3

Q: 2 - You elect to open one heart, as did South in today's deal. Your partner responds one spade, you bid two diamonds and he rebids two spades. What do you say?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
2Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: Partner has six or more spades with fewer than 10 points, and if his hand is minimum, eight tricks may be your limit. But if he has K J 10 9 5 3, 4, J 2, K 8 6 5, four spades will have a fine chance. Raise to three spades. Do not bid notrump. You need to play at spades.

Question 3

  Your Hand
 A K 8 4
 8 4
 K 8 7 5
 J 10 6

Q: 3 - What do you bid next as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass2Pass
2NTPass3Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 4: Partner suggests six hearts, four clubs and minimum values. Your options include a pass, a return to three hearts or a raise to four clubs. Since you have prime values, heart tolerance and a useful club holding, bid four hearts. Partner may hold 7 6, K Q 10 7 6 3, 2, A Q 9 4.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 A K Q J 8
 A 5 3 2
 8 5
 6 4

Q: 4 - What do you answer as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: You need only the right minimum opening bid from partner to have a slam: He might hold 9 3, K Q 9 6 4, A 4 2, A 3 2. Jump to two spades and support the hearts next. If you have a slam, partner will see that you get there. The 19-point standard for a jump-shift is a myth. Jump when you can visualize slam and know what suit will be trumps.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 J 7 5 4
 A K
 J 9
 A K J 9 2

Q: 5 - What do you bid as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
---3
?

 Your choice:
A: 3NT: Preempts can give you headaches, and this one is major. If you double, you may find a spade fit but risk an unwelcome response of four diamonds from partner. My inclination would be to bid 3NT, hoping partner has his fair share of the missing high cards. I would be ready to apologize.
